My former apartment was on the second and third floors of a four story apartment building made of concrete block and corrugated metal. Without the lights turned on, the main floor of our unit was consistently quite dark, as all windows and doors looked out into a (large-ish) light well.
In the stairwell leading up to the third floor, which was painted a pinkish beige, there is a double height ceiling with a large skylight that bathes the entire staircase with natural light. As the weather changes and clouds pass overhead, the light pulsates and changes.
Curious to see if I would perceive the space differently by manipulating how the natural light interacted with the walls, I painted all of the walls and the ceiling bright white, and watched.
I regret not getting a video of this.
Materials used: white paint, light, dark, the sun, shadow, time, space.
