Perception I

My former apartment exists on the second and third floors of a former industrial building, and has few windows facing outwards/the street. There is, however, a skylight in the stairwell. When I moved in, the walls in this stairwell were painted a flat, pinky beige colour and didn’t reflect much of the light let in by the skylight. I painted the entire stairwell a glossy white to see if it would change the quality of light in the stairwell and on the dark, second floor, and to see if my perception of the space changed. My findings: at the height of the day, the light was much brighter and would pulsate as clouds passed. I regret not taking a video of this.

Perception II

Against the backdrop of Toronto’s City Place (condo-land!) I decided to build a house out of cardboard with a skylight. I wanted to stay in it for several hours at mid-day to see how the light changed inside the box.
